DIY: Puppy Toys

July 29, 2011 by Margaret 1 Comment

You see that face that is the face of a puppy that needs more toys. Those pleading eyes say it all!

Okay, actually she has lots of toys but I find it hard to resist buying her more every time I go to the pet store. Then I remembered one of Cisco's favorite toys was a stuffed dog bone I had made him. He looked so cute walking around with it; it was large enough the ends hung out of his mouth like a real bone.

Unlike Cisco, who didn't care what he slept on Twinkie has a thing for fleece. As I was digging around in my fabric stash I remembered a fleece shirt I had that was bagged up to give-away. I dug it out and began working on a bone for her.

Draw a bone on a piece of card stock.

I am using the sleeve of the shirt

Smooth out or iron your fabric

Trace around your pattern with a pen or marker that is dark enough to show up.

Cut out two of your shape

Sew around the edge using a secure stitch. I went around the bone twice leaving an opening on the side to stuff it.
Each square is 1" so as you can the bone is about 7" long, perfect for Twinkie!
Trim the seams and turn right side out

Now you start stuffing in the stuffing. I used fiberfill but you can use anything that is soft and washable.

I stuffed it until it was firm but not hard. Then you sew the opening shut making sure it is a strong stitch.

Done! Now the true test, does Twinkie approve?

I am going to say she does. As I tried to get closer to take a picture she ran outside with it. I grabbed a few pictures of her playing in the grass but as soon as she spotted me she ran into the garden and tried to hide it in the tomatoes. Just a note these pictures were taken a few months ago; sadly our grass is no longer this lush or green.

Safety Note: Make sure you check your pet’s toys regularly store bought and homemade alike. Those sharp little teeth can do some real damage!

Do you spoil your pet with toys? Do they have favorites? Do you ever make them?
