How to Sew a Christmas Stocking

November 18, 2022 by Margaret Leave a Comment

This week I've been getting ready for the holidays, including cleaning my sewing room and going through my holiday decorations. That's when I realized I needed a couple of new Christmas stockings. Since the sewing room was clean and I had fabric on hand, I decided to create a shorter version of our sew-a-long that shows how to sew a Christmas stocking. Both versions included two free full-size printable stocking patterns.

The Christmas Stocking Sewing Pattern

The full-size pattern is a printable PDF that needs to be taped together. This is the same file I introduced in 2017 in the post: Free Christmas Stocking Pattern. I am working on redrafting the pattern to include two other sizes and options: an A0 file and a projector file.

Supplies to Sew the Christmas Stocking Pattern

The fabric requirement listed below is enough to sew both the large and small stockings.

  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Thread
  • 1 yard of fabric for the outside of the stocking
  • 1 yard of fabric for lining
  • Fake fur or fabric for the cuff

Christmas Stocking Pattern Hacks

There are many ways to change the look of the stockings. A few things I've done to jazz up the stockings are listed below, but the possibilities are endless!

  • Add buttons to the cuff.
  • Personalize the stocking with embroidery.
  • Jazz it up with glitter.
  • Adding a patch to the heel or the toe.
  • Stitch around the edge with an overcast stitch

Pet Stockings

cat stocking filled with cat toys.

We can't leave out our pets when it comes to the holidays! These stockings are roomy enough to fill with your pet's favorite treats with room to spare. The patterns are very easy to read and understand, and I've broken everything down into step-by-step instructions with LOTS of full-color photos and illustrations. I do hope to have a video sew-along available soon. If you purchase these now, you will automatically receive the videos when they are completed at no additional charge. We have a cat Christmas stocking and a dog bone Christmas stocking pattern.
