When you first sit down at a sewing machine, all of the buttons, dials, numbers, and stitch symbols can be a little intimidating. What stitch length should you use? What does stitch width mean? And what exactly happens when you turn the tension dial?
The good news is that you don’t need to understand every setting on your sewing machine before you can start sewing.
For most beginner sewing projects, you’ll use just a handful of basic settings. Once you understand what those settings control and how changing them affects your stitches, using your sewing machine becomes much easier.
In this guide, we’ll look at the basic sewing machine settings every beginner should understand, including stitch length, stitch width, thread tension, needle position, and stitch selection. I’ll also give you some good starting settings to try on your next project.

Before You Start Adjusting Your Sewing Machine
Every sewing machine is a little different.
A basic mechanical machine may have knobs and dials for adjusting stitch length and width, while a computerized sewing machine may allow you to make those same adjustments using buttons or a touchscreen.
Your machine may also have settings and stitches that aren’t covered here. That’s okay!
The goal isn’t to memorize everything your sewing machine can do. Start by learning the settings you’ll use most often and refer to your sewing machine manual when you need information specific to your model.

What Is Stitch Length?
Stitch length controls how long each individual stitch is.
On many sewing machines, stitch length is measured in millimeters. A stitch length setting of 2.5, for example, produces stitches about 2.5 mm long.
The higher the number, the longer the stitches. The lower the number, the shorter the stitches.
For most general sewing, a stitch length of around 2.5 mm is a good place to start.
When to Use a Shorter Stitch Length
Shorter stitches place more stitches into the same amount of fabric. You might use a shorter stitch when sewing:
- Small curves
- Detailed areas
- Lightweight fabrics
- Areas where you need additional control
Be careful about making stitches too short. Very tiny stitches can be difficult to remove and may weaken or damage some fabrics because the needle repeatedly penetrates a small area.
When to Use a Longer Stitch Length
Longer stitches are useful for several sewing techniques. You may want to increase your stitch length when:
- Basting
- Gathering fabric
- Topstitching
- Sewing heavier fabrics such as denim
- Working with multiple fabric layers
A longer stitch can also make topstitching more visible and decorative.

What Is Stitch Width?
Stitch width controls how wide a stitch is from side to side.
This setting is most noticeable when you’re using a zigzag or decorative stitch. A narrow zigzag moves the needle only a small distance from side to side. Increase the stitch width, and the needle travels farther from left to right, creating a wider zigzag.
For a standard straight stitch, the width is usually set to 0 because the needle isn’t moving from side to side.
However, this is where knowing your machine matters. On some sewing machines, changing the width setting while using a straight stitch changes the needle position rather than creating a wider stitch. That’s useful for techniques such as edgestitching, topstitching, sewing zippers, and creating specific seam allowances.
Be Careful When Changing Needle Position
Always make sure your needle has enough clearance when you’re changing stitch width or needle position — especially if you’re using a specialty presser foot.
Some presser feet have only a small opening for the needle. If you move the needle too far, it can strike the presser foot and break.
When in doubt, slowly turn the handwheel toward you for a complete stitch before sewing with the foot pedal. This lets you make sure the needle clears the presser foot and needle plate.
Sewing Machine Tension Explained
Of all the sewing machine settings, thread tension probably frustrates beginners the most.
But remember this: don’t start turning the tension dial every time your stitches don’t look right. Thread tension is only one possible cause of poor stitching.
Before adjusting tension, I usually check two things first:
- The sewing machine needle
- The threading
A bent, dull, damaged, or incorrectly installed needle can cause skipped stitches, thread breakage, and other problems. You can learn more in my guide on changing your sewing machine needle.
Then completely rethread the machine with the presser foot raised.
Those two simple steps solve a surprising number of sewing-machine problems.
What Does Sewing Machine Tension Actually Do?
Your sewing machine forms a stitch by bringing the upper thread and bobbin thread together. When the tension is balanced correctly, the two threads meet within the layers of fabric.
You shouldn’t have large loops of upper thread showing underneath the fabric, and the bobbin thread shouldn’t be pulled noticeably onto the top. The stitches should look balanced on both sides.
Signs your upper tension may be too tight:
- Bobbin thread being pulled toward the top of the fabric
- Fabric puckering
- Thread breaking
- Stitches that appear overly tight
Signs your upper tension may be too loose:
- Loops of upper thread underneath the fabric
- Loose or sloppy-looking stitches
- Poorly formed stitches
But again, don’t assume tension is automatically the problem. Incorrect threading, the wrong needle, a damaged needle, poor-quality thread, lint buildup, or an incorrectly inserted bobbin can produce symptoms that look like a tension problem.
What Number Should Sewing Machine Tension Be Set At?
There isn’t one tension number that’s correct for every machine, fabric, thread, and project. Many machines have a normal or recommended tension range indicated on the tension dial or in the owner’s manual.
Start with your machine’s recommended setting. Then test your stitches on a scrap of the same fabric you’re using for your project.
That last part matters. A tension setting that works beautifully on quilting cotton may not produce the same result on denim, lightweight fabric, or several layers of material.
Make small adjustments and sew another test line after each change. Don’t turn the tension dial dramatically and then wonder which adjustment fixed — or worsened — the problem.

Choosing the Right Stitch
Most sewing machines have far more stitches than you’ll use on a typical project. Don’t let that overwhelm you. If you’re a beginner, start by learning a few basic stitches.
Straight Stitch
The straight stitch will probably be the stitch you use most often. You’ll use it for things like:
- Sewing seams
- Topstitching
- Basting
- Gathering
- Sewing darts
- Many alterations
If you’re brand new to your machine, get comfortable sewing a straight stitch before worrying about all those decorative stitches.
Zigzag Stitch
A zigzag stitch moves from side to side as you sew. It’s useful for:
- Finishing some raw edges
- Sewing certain stretchy fabrics
- Appliqué
- Attaching elastic
- Decorative stitching
Both the length and width of a zigzag stitch can usually be adjusted, which makes it an excellent stitch for learning how those two settings work together.
Stretch Stitches
If your sewing machine has stretch stitches, they may be useful when sewing knit or other stretchy fabrics. However, your machine’s available stretch stitches and recommended settings will vary. Always test the stitch on a scrap before sewing your actual project.

These settings aren’t rules. Think of them as starting points. Your ideal settings will depend on your machine, needle, thread, fabric, presser foot, and project.

Remember: these are starting points, not universal settings. Always test your machine on scrap fabric first.
Save Your Scraps!
Here’s a beginner sewing habit that’s worth developing: whenever you’re about to start a project, save a few scraps from your fabric.
Use those pieces to test:
- Stitch length
- Stitch width
- Tension
- Needle choice
- Thread color
- Presser foot
- Buttonholes
- Decorative stitches
If your project has interfacing, batting, lining, or multiple fabric layers, try to recreate those layers in your test piece too.
It’s much better to discover a problem on a scrap than on your project.
Don’t Forget About Your Sewing Machine Needle
Your machine settings are only part of the equation. The type and size of sewing machine needle also affect how your machine stitches.
Different fabrics may require different needles. Denim, knits, lightweight woven fabrics, and other materials don’t necessarily sew best with the same needle. And even if you’re using the correct type, sewing with an old or damaged needle can cause trouble.
If you’re suddenly getting:
- Skipped stitches
- Broken thread
- Uneven stitches
- Fabric damage
- A popping sound as the needle enters the fabric
…check your needle. Replacing the needle is one of the simplest troubleshooting steps you can take.
Your Presser Foot Matters Too
The all-purpose or zigzag foot that came on your sewing machine can handle many everyday sewing tasks, but specialty presser feet can make certain techniques much easier.
For example, there are feet designed for:
- Zippers
- Buttonholes
- Gathering
- Blind hems
- Edge stitching
- Quilting
- Sewing multiple layers

Why Do My Sewing Machine Settings Keep Changing?
If your machine sewed beautifully yesterday and suddenly isn’t today, don’t assume you need different settings right away.
Work through the basics first. Check that:
- The machine is threaded correctly
- The bobbin is inserted correctly
- The needle is installed correctly
- The needle isn’t bent, dull, or damaged
- You’re using an appropriate needle for your fabric
- The presser foot is attached correctly
- Thread hasn’t become caught somewhere
- The machine is clean around the bobbin area
Then test the machine again.
Troubleshooting systematically is much easier than randomly changing tension, stitch length, needle size, thread, and everything else at the same time. Change one thing at a time so you know what actually solved the problem.
Practice Your Sewing Machine Settings
One of the best ways to understand your sewing machine is simply to experiment with it.
Grab a piece of scrap fabric and sew several rows of straight stitches. Start at a stitch length of 1.5 and increase the length with each row:
1.5 → 2.0 → 2.5 → 3.0 → 3.5 → 4.0
Look at the difference.
Then switch to a zigzag stitch. Keep the stitch length the same and gradually increase the width. You’ll quickly see exactly what those numbers on your machine are controlling.
You can even write the setting beside each row with a fabric marker and keep the sample near your sewing machine as a reference.
This kind of hands-on practice is one of the fastest ways to become comfortable using your machine.
Frequently Asked Questions
What stitch length should I use for denim? Start around 3–3.5 mm for general denim seams. Heavier or multi-layered denim may need an even longer stitch to avoid thread breakage and skipped stitches — always test on a scrap first.
Why does my tension keep changing? Usually it’s not your tension dial at all — it’s the needle or the threading. Rethread the machine with the presser foot raised and check for a bent or dull needle before touching the tension dial.
What’s a good all-purpose stitch length for beginners? 2.5 mm is a solid starting point for most general sewing on medium-weight fabric. Adjust up for heavier fabrics or topstitching, and down for lightweight fabrics or detailed curves.
Do I need to change my stitch width for a straight stitch? Usually no — straight stitch width is typically set to 0. On some machines, though, adjusting “width” while straight-stitching actually shifts the needle position instead, which is useful for edgestitching or zippers. Check your manual to see which your machine does.
You Don’t Have to Master Your Sewing Machine All at Once
Your sewing machine can probably do far more than you need it to do right now. That’s a good thing.
You don’t need to master every decorative stitch, specialty foot, button, or setting before you start making things.
Learn the basics first: choose your stitch, set your stitch length, adjust the width when needed, use the correct needle and presser foot, test everything on scrap fabric, then sew.
