If you've ever sewn a zipper pouch or bag, you've probably noticed that sometimes the ends of the zipper can look a little messy or, worse, get caught in your seams. That's where zipper tabs come in! These small but mighty additions clean up your zipper ends, giving your projects a polished, professional look.
Even better? They're incredibly easy to install. In this tutorial, we'll walk you through the simplest way to install zipper tabs even if you're brand new to sewing.

What Are Zipper Tabs?
Zipper tabs are small pieces of fabric sewn onto the ends of your zipper. They:
- Cover the raw zipper edges
- Prevent the zipper ends from getting lost in the seams
- Add a decorative touch to your project
Supplies You'll Need
- A zipper (nylon coil or metal—either works!)
- Two small fabric rectangles (about 1.5" x 2.5" each)
- Scissors or a rotary cutter
- Sewing machine
- Iron (optional but helpful)
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Pins or clips
Step-by-Step: The Easiest Way to Add Zipper Tabs
Step 1: Shorten the Zipper (If Needed)
If your zipper is longer than your project, no problem! Measure your desired zipper length (including the seam allowance), and mark it. Trim off the excess, but make sure to leave enough room for your zipper tabs to cover the cut ends. For more details, check out our article, How to Shorten the Length of Any Zipper.
💡 Tip: If you're trimming a metal zipper, use pliers to remove the metal teeth near the end.
Step 2: Prepare Your Fabric Tabs
Fold each fabric rectangle in half (short sides together), right sides out, and press. Then, open and fold each short end toward the center crease, like folding a piece of paper into quarters. Fold it in half again along the original crease. You should end up with a small, neat fabric tab with no raw edges exposed.
Final size: Your tab should be approximately 1.25" x 1", but adjust as needed to accommodate your zipper width.
Step 3: Attach the Tabs to the Zipper
Slide one fabric tab over each end of the zipper, sandwiching the zipper tape between the folded fabric. Clip or pin in place.
Then, sew across the tab about ⅛" from the fabric edge using a straight stitch. Go slowly and backstitch at each end. Repeat for the other side.
Optional: Sew a second line of stitching closer to the zipper edge for a decorative, reinforced look.
Step 4: Trim and Finish
Trim the fabric edges so they're flush with the zipper tape. Your zipper is now neatly finished with tabs and ready to be sewn into your pouch, bag, or other project.
Why You'll Love This Method
