How To Thread A Sewing Machine and Wind A Bobbin

Have you always wanted to learn how to sew or are you currently sewing but often frustrated when you use the sewing machine? I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say they'll never learn how to sew or they aren't good at using their machine. Most of the time the biggest issue they are having is because they need to learn how to properly thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin. Before you can successfully sew you need to know how to thread your machine and wind a bobbin properly.

How to Thread a Sewing Machine

Learn the parts of your sewing machine. To properly thread a sewing machine you need to know the parts of your sewing machine. Miss even 1 thread guide and your machine will not sew correctly.

Thread Guides

Thread guides guide the thread and keep it in place. Sewing machines have different thread guides for sewing and winding a bobbin. The owner's manual will show you the different paths and guides. Some sewing machines also have the thread guides printed on the machine with arrows pointing to the path the thread takes.

Tension disc

Tensions disks control the amount of pressure applied to the thread for an even feed to the machine needle causing an evenly formed stitch.  When you miss getting the thread in the tension disc fully the machine will not sew properly. If you've ever gotten a large wad of tangled thread on the underside of the fabric it is usually because the thread is not properly seated in the tension disc or that area needs to be cleaned.

How to Use an Automatic Needle Threader

Part of threading a sewing machine is threading the needle. If the needle is not threaded the machine will not sew. To properly use the automatic needle threader the needle needs to be in the correct alignment. That is usually in the highest position. You can find the needle's highest position by turning the handwheel toward you.

How to Wind a Bobbin

Knowing how to wind a bobbin is just as important as knowing how to thread the sewing machine. Only use bobbins designed for the sewing machine you are using. Just because a bobbin fits in the bobbin housing does not mean it is the correct bobbin. The wrong bobbin will cause tangled thread, broken thread, broken needles, and much more. Most sewing machine bobbins can be purchased on Amazon. Once the bobbin is wound correctly make sure you clip the tail sticking up out of the hole at the top of the bobbin and insert the bobbin into the bobbin housing or shuttle with the thread winding off the correct way.
